Soccer Club in Seattle invitesPKS (Pilkarski Klub of Seattle) is an all-Polish soccer team, currently playing in Seattle's premier recreational league, GSSL ( www.gssl.org). The team looks for new players aged 17-40, with good skills for the summer season, which begins June 5th. Games are every Sunday, and most of players practice at least once a week in the Seattle area. Pope John Paul II miniseries on CBS, Dec 4 & 7 CBS miniseries about the Polish Pope, directed by John K. Harrison, features Jon Voight playing the pontiff and Cary Elwes as a young Karol Wojtyla. The first part covers the life of Karol Wojtyla in Poland, the second his life as the Pope. Movie was shot in Poland and in Vatican, where the filmmakers enjoyed unprecedented access. Jon Voight who won an Oscar for his Vietnam vet role in Coming Home (1979) has been praised for his depiction of Pope’s warmth and charisma. 9, 5 pm Polish Home Association invites to a celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Solidarity movement. On August 31, 1980, a general strike led by Lech Walesa won the right to independent trade unions; that event started the collapse of communism in Europe. The program recognizes importance of Solidarity for democracy in Europe and honors Solidarity leaders living in the Seattle area; distinguished guest include Polish Consul P. Kapuscinska, UW Prof. H. Ellison, Seattle City Councilmember Jean Godden and WA State Labor Councilmember Rick Bender. Urgent by June 28: Host families needed for high school students on exchange A local rep for a non-profit called EdVentures is looking for host families for 2 Polish teenagers: Malgorzata, who is 17 and from Wroclaw, and Michal, also 17, from Koszalin. Host families have to speak English at home. The students will be insured and have their own pocket money. They will be arriving to attend 11th grade just before the school starts in September and would stay for the whole school year, but the host families are needed now. A host family for Malgorzata is needed by Tuesday, June 28.

Seattle Polish Film Festival at SAM, Apr 23 – May 1 Polish Film Festival moved from the familiar early November slot to April and back to the Seattle Art Museum with hope of returning to the old glory. SPFF actually does look great this year! The films include the 2005 Oscar contender Welts (Pregi) and the renown Symmetry (Symetria) as well as another 2005 Oscar contender, a short The Fallen Art by Oscar nominated Tomek Baginski. The Festival has never had so many guests! The Opening Night Gala will be attended by directors Magdalena Piekorz, Artur Wiecek and Witold Beres as well as actors Krzysztof Globisz and Grzegorz Hajdarowicz, while the second weekend will bring directors Janusz Zaorski and Lech Majewski. The 13th SPFF edition opens on April 23, 2005, with a screening of Angel in Love (Zakochany Aniol), directed by Artur Wiecek whose Angel in Cracow was such a big hit at the 2002 SPFF. a przyszłość poezji" W niedzielę 1 maja o godz. 19 w Kane Hall na University of Washington odbędzie się kolejny wykład z serii "Prezentacje Polskie". Kontynuując uniwersytecką serię, Komitet Funduszu Studiów Polskich przedstawi dwóch wybitnych poetów: Adama Zagajewskiego i Edwarda Hirscha. Adam Zagajewski, związany w latach 70 z polska opozycją, w roku 1980 wyjechał z kraju i przez ponad 20 lat mieszkał w Paryżu. Od roku 1988 każdą wiosnę spędza w Teksasie, prowdząc kursy creative writing na University of Houston. W roku 2002 powrócił do Krakowa. Ostatnio został uhonorowany prestiżową 2004 Neustadt International Prize for Literature. Obok książek opublikowanych w Polsce, jest autorem wydanych w Stanach czterech zbiorów esejów (Solidarity, Solitude; Two Cities; Another Beauty; A Defense of Ardor) i tyluż tomów poezji (Tremor; Canvas; Mysticism for Beginners; Without End). Edward Hirsch, poeta i krytyk amerykański, ma szczególne zasługi dla popularyzacji poezji, w tym także polskiej. Po latach nauczania na uniwersytetach, objął ostatnio funkcję prezesa John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fundation. Wielokrotnie nagradzany, wydał sześć tomów poezji oraz trzy prace krytycznoliterackie, z których prawdziwym bestsellerem stała się opublikowana w roku 1999 książka How to Read a Poem (and Fall in Love with Poetry). Dwaj znakomici poeci mieli już niejednokrotnie okazję do wspólnych wystąpień. Wspólpracowali ze sobą w Houston, prezentowali poezje w Nowym Yorku, najważniejszego dokonali jednak w Polsce: od roku 2002 rokrocznie organizują Krakowskie Seminarium Poetyckie (Kraków Poetry Seminar). Zapraszają do Krakowa amerykańskich poetów, a także studentów, by dyskutować o twórczości własnej i cudzej, polskiej i amerykańskiej. Poezja zatacza krąg, budując most między dwiema - można by sądzić - nieprzystawalnymi kulturami. Tematem majowego wystąpienia Adama Zagajewskiego i Edwarda Hirscha będzie twórczość Czesława Miłosza. W rozpisanym na dwa głosy wykładzie "Czesław Miłosz a przyszłość poezji", skupionym na dziele i wpływie poety-Noblisty, znajdzie się także miejsce na ogólne rozważania o roli poezji, jak i wątek najzupełniej osobisty. "Czeslaw Milosz and the Future of Poetry"
On Sunday, May 1st, 7:00 p.m. at the UW Kane Hall, the Polish Studies Endowment Fund Committee will present two outstanding poets: Edward Hirsch and Adam Zagajewski. A professor of creative writing at the University of Houston, Adam Zagajewski is a leading Polish poet and a recipient of the 2004 Neustadt International Prize for Literature. Edward Hirsch, an acclaimed American poet, is the current president of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. For the past three years these two brilliant poets have invited American poets to Poland to attend the Kraków Poetry Seminar, creating a very special bridge between the two cultures. As guests of the Polish Studies Distinguished Lecturers Series, they will talk about the poetry of Nobel Prize winner Czesław Miłosz who passed away in 2004. Their conversation, entitled "Czesław Miłosz and the Future of Poetry", will cover many interesting topics including the significance of poetry, Miłosz's influence, and the two poets' own artistic journeys. The lecture will be followed by a wine and cheese reception. Free admission. The same day, May 1st, 2005, at 12:00-2:00 PM, a fundraising luncheon with Adam Zagajewski and Edward Hirsch will be hosted at the private residence. 1905 - 5 kwietnia 2005Pani Jadwiga Gołubiec urodziła się w 1905 roku w Kronstadzie, Rosja. W latach międzywojennych ukończyła Uniwersytet w Rydze w Łotwie. Po napaści ZSRR na Łotwę rodzice i maż zostali wywiezieni na Syberię skąd już nie powrócili. W 1950, wraz z synem Romanem, wyemigrowała do USA. Za zasługi w krzewieniu kultury polskiej, w roku 2000 została odznaczona Krzyżem Kawalerskim Orderu Odrodzenia Polski. Osierociła syna Romana, dwóch wnuków Jana i Marka oraz dwóch prawnuków Nicholasa i Jonathana. Msza żałobna odbędzie się 8-go kwietnia o 11-tej w Kościele Św. Małgorzaty w Seattle.
Zamiast kwiatów rodzina prosi o
składanie datków, poprzez Fundację Domu Polskiego, które zostaną zużyte na

A Question of Honor lecture at the UW,
April 1, 7 pm Lynne Olson and Stanely Cloud, the authors of A Question of Honor, The Kosciuszko Squadron: Forgotten Heroes of World War II, are coming to Seattle on April 1, 2005, as guest speakers invited by the UW Polish Studies endowment committee. The book tells the story of the Polish fighter pilots who helped to save England in the 1940 Battle of Britain and their betrayal by the Allies when the WWII ended. Szpakiewicza w Tacoma, 30-go marca, 19:30 Pan Marek Szpakiewicz, urodzony w Lublinie jest wyróżniającym się młodym polskim artystą który zdobył szereg międzynarodowych nagród. Pomiędzy nimi nagrodę Antonio Janigro w Zagrzebiu w 1996 i nagrodę Tansman w Łodzi. Ostatnio wygrał konkurs wiolonczelowy Mu Phi Epsilon w 2003 roku w USA. Pracował w filmie "Finding Neverland" muzykę do którego napisał laureat Oskara 2005 Jan A.P. Kaczmarek. Cellist M. Szpakiewicz in recital in Tacoma, March 30, 7:30 pm Marek Szpakiewicz, a native of Lublin, Poland, is an outstanding young cellist who has several international awards to his credit, among them the 1996 Antonio Janigro Competition in Zagreb, Croatia, and the Tansman International Competition in Lodz, Poland. Most recently, he won the 2003 Mu Phi Epsilon cello competition, gaining instant recognition in the USA. He also worked as the film orchestrator for Finding Neverland, the movie featuring the Oscar winning music by Jan A.P. Kaczmarek. Mr. Szpakiewicz will perform his recital in the Tacoma Philharmonic Virtuoso Artist Dicscovery Series at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. NW Chopin Festival winners’ concert at the Polish Home, Feb 19, 7 pm This concert features the prizewinners of the 3rd Northwest Chopin Festival from the week earlier. Once the tension of the competition is gone, the young pianists are expected to show a lot of class as they demonstrate their winning performances. The concert will be followed by an award ceremony and a festive reception. It’s an autobiography of the successful gadfly screenwriter, novelist and playwright. Auschwitz documentary at KCTS, Jan 19 & 26, Feb 2 at 9 pm Jan 27, 2005 is the 60th anniversary of the Red Army liberation of Auschwitz, the notorious Nazi death camp at Oswiecim, Poland. To mark the occasion, KCTS is broadcasting a 6 hour BBC/PBS documentary Auschwitz Inside the Nazi State. Auschwitz victims include at least 1,100,000 Jews, over 140,000 Poles, about 20,000 Gypsies, over 10,000 Soviet POWs, and over 10,000 other people. Ms. Jadwiga Golubiec celebrates 100th birthday Ms. Jadwiga Golubiec, a diminutive lady with a kind and witty disposition well known and liked in our community, celebrated her 100th birthday over the last weekend. Ms. Golubiec was an active member of the Polish community till quite recently. She was also known for her unwavering support and fundraising efforts on behalf of the Polish Museum in Rapperswil, Switzerland. For promoting Poland abroad, in 2000 Ms. Golubiec was honored with the Cavalier Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. We wish her good health for years to come. Portland Chamber Orchestra concert in Portland, Jan 29 & 30
The concert features
music by Slavic composers such as Dvorak and Shostakovich but also
including Henryk
Gorecki and Wojciech Kilar. The guest pianist is Waldemar
Malicki, one of the best pianists in Poland. The first and the second
half of the concert will be introduced by a dance performed by the
Polish dance group Sobotka,
which will also dance after the concert.

Secretary. I have been involved at the Polish Home for many years. I
started by dancing and

would like to submit my candidacy for PHA Board of Trustees. I have been
a member of PHA and the Seattle-Gdynia Sister City for three years,
serving as SGSCA Secretary for two. This is my third year as a student
of Polish at Polska Skola. My travels to Poland have enriched my life
beyond words. I maintain contact with family and friends that I've made
over the years. And of course, I've been 50% Polish all my life. It
would be an honor and a privilege to serve the Polish Home Association.
